The wise adage goes: If you can’t eat it, don’t put it on your skin.
And if there ever was a better reason to heed it, we now have the case of ubiquitous microbeads. Not only can you now find these little bits of chemical shrapnel in your facial, dental and body-care products, but you will also find them in the flesh of marine life that you consume and, thus, in your body as well. Not only will this "technology" clean your pores and make your teeth pearly white, but it will also confuse your digestive and endocrine system and cause your liver great angst as your body tries to process just what it's supposed to do with this new wave of ingested toxins.
Sorry if all of this sounds dramatic, but it kind of is. Even the US government--which lags behind on protecting humans and the planet from whacky, lucrative experiments that cause immeasurable damage to life on Earth--has banned microbeads in products, while Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK and other countries examine the science behind this toxic onslaught of a seemingly good idea turned bad.
How can you be a part of the solution? Pay attention to what you are buying—in the case of microbeads, here is a handy list of products per country that are definite no-nos. This is generally becoming a good rule of thumb as globalization shows increasing tendency to venerate a golden cow of capitalism above the concept of the welfare of all of life on this planet.
Please, please share this article if you discover even an ounce of passion rising inside yourself about it. It’s time we speak up, read up, and act with integrity about what we learn and know to be right. This planet is getting trashed! Who else will protect it if not each one of us!
