A lot of people think that when they travel it is the place that changes their outlook, their mood, their energy. But I'm writing this to say that that's only a fragment of the story.
For years now, I've progressively grown interested in the astrological analysis of geo-relocation. The idea is simple: Your energy changes when your location does ... so while your natal chart is a blueprint for deeper energetic patterns and personal tendencies, the "dial" around its edge rotates as you move anywhere in the world. Essentially you retain the natal energies but don new energies when you move.
Like a Change of Shoes
In fact, your rising changes, the emphasis on houses changes, your descendent changes, your midheaven emphasis changes, etc. Why do I think this is so cool? Because for years I have been traveling (Sagittarius moon and Neptune and Sun-Jupiter in the 9th ... go figure!) and have been paying attention to the subtle (and not-so-subtle) patterns of experience as I do.
This year in particular, I found myself in Thailand, Bali, Portugal, the US, Peru, Greece, Switzerland and back to Thailand and Bali again. And I have taken careful notes.
In Lima, in particular, my Chiron sat directly on my midheaven. I mean, right, square, on the midheaven. Do you know how I felt?? Can you imagine?
I approach this stuff as an experiment. I went to Lima thinking "this could be nothing or this could really be something!" And boy, I tell you, it was something. I felt like a walking wounded person!
In Koh Samui, Surat Thani in particular, my Uranus goes right up to my midheaven. You know the energy of Uranus right? If not, it's like a lightening bolt--flashes of innovation and futuristic wisdom as well as healing influences. Two times in Surat Thani I have brushed shoulders with death himself. Indeed, nowhere else have I even had an accident! I've lived in the most precarious places--even Nairobi for months and months--and something about my energy in Surat Thani means BOOM!
Right now, I am writing this from Bali, where my rising goes from Cancer to Aquarius and my Mercury energy shifts into the second house. Surprise, surprise, I find myself counting pennies here and quite frugal. I find myself clinging to more stable modes of operation. One step at a time. Saturn goes into the sixth here as well and nothing can ever be perfect enough so I have to hold my tongue ... this is NOT a place to expect efficiency, routine, any of the like. Yet my energy really tilts this way. So I find myself kneeling in front of Ganesha and asking for grace each morning.
In Italy I become a bit of a loner as my Saturn comes right to my midheaven. In California it sits right on my ascendant--and, not shockingly, that is my least favorite place in the whole world.
Some places are much easier than others relative to various sectors of life. But something will always be called out a bit more somehow. In Doha, where I lived for seven years, Saturn was in the 8th. Lesson after lesson after lesson--stripped again and again of my own rules. Humbled. I hobbled away a lot wiser but quite beaten up for it!
Why Does this Matter?
Besides obvious reasons that occur to you within fascinated seconds of reading this, I want to suggest that this could revolutionize the way people think about their "lot in life." How many friends I have listened to who cry about their circumstances and ignore me when I suggest "maybe you should move and see if your life picks up somehow."
It's easy for me to say (again, all that Sag and 9th house makes it actually more difficult for me to settle in one place--although I am now progressed into a Venus Cancer so this does have me setting up a homestead in the near future I sense!). But really, come on! It's your LIFE we are talking about. And the whole world is yours if you prioritize your energy alignment in ways that work with you and not against you.
People talk about money and all kinds of things. Before you tell me about this, I will ask you if you have really put out the request to move, to change, to be open to something totally new--to give up what you take for granted as the way you live.
That is the precursor energy for new entering your life. Without that energy you can play the lotto and do all you like, but the universe kinda knows when you are bluffing--when you really, deeply aren't sure if you want a change. So it won't trouble you.
This is the way I have experienced it.
Food for thought.
At the very least, try this out.
Next time you travel, give yourself a few days to "shift" into the time zone and place. Feel what you feel. Observe. Journal. Notice what in your life starts to take center stage. Do you become more cautious? More carefree?
